A chipped or cracked windshield can be a real nuance, but it happens to people everyday. Most of the time, there is nothing you can do to prevent it from happening. Although, you can be aware of the most common causes and hopefully be able to avoid windshield chip repair or a windshield replacement. The following is a list of the most common causes of a chipped windshield or a cracked windshield.

Airborne Rocks

The roads and highways are covered with a variety of rocks such as pebbles, gravel and asphalt. When a car drives over the rocks especially at a high speed, the rocks get stirred up and become airborne. Regrettably, your car may be one of the objects a flying rock hits. If this happens you are likely to be left with a rock chip or if the rock was large or your windshield was it by several of them you may find yourself with a cracked windshield. Either way you are looking at a rock chip repair or a windshield replacement.

Airborne Debris

Much like airborne rocks debris can cause a windshield chip or a crack windshield. Most debris comes from construction trucks or other trucks on the highway carrying an uncovered load. I’m sure you have seen someone driving a pick up truck full of “junk” on their way to the dump or a truck filled with household items when someone is moving, if something flies off the back of any one of those types of truck and hits your windshield at best you will end up with a chip and need to bring your car to an auto glass replacement shop to either have a chip repair done or your broken auto glass fixed. If your crack is larger, say a toaster hits your windshield chances are you’re not going to want to ride around with broken auto glass on your lap so a windshield replacement would be necessary.

Weakened Glass

A rock chip in your car’s windshield usually causes a weak spot in the glass of your windshield. This can make the rest of your windshield more susceptible to more chips and cracks. That’s why it is so important to have a rock chip or a cracked windshield fixed as soon as possible.

Repair

At Centennial Auto Glass our technicians take great pride in their work. Having a rock chip repair done is less expensive than having your windshield replaced. If the broken auto glass can be repaired they will repair it not replace the entire windshield. If the windshield does need to be replaced they will work with your auto insurance company (if you have glass coverage) to get the windshield replaced.
